spineandnerves

Read our presentation regarding Analysis of External Drainage after Posterior Cervical Surgery. We analyzed the importance of using a posterior cervical drain after posterior cervical procedures. We delineated the daily output of drainage in all patients having any posterior fusion or decompression. The findings demonstrate there is significant amount of postoperative drainage after surgery and a drain is of paramount importance. These results will be presented at the AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves Annual Meeting Joint section on Spinen in Phoenix, Arizona, March 11 - 14, 2009.

Read our presentation regarding our Outcomes Analysis after Cervical Hybrid Arthroplasty.  The Cervical Hybrid Arthroplasty is a procedure where an Artificial disc replacement and a fusion are performed in the same patient. The combination of both procedures constitutes a hybrid (Arthroplasty and Fusion). This presentation highlights our results using my “Lifestyles Outcomes Scale.” This is our personally created scale which details return to activities such as return to work, driving, and sports after surgery.  These results will be presented at the AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves Annual Meeting Joint section on Spinen in Phoenix, Arizona, March 11 - 14, 2009.

Read our presentation regarding our Outcomes Analysis after Multilevel Cervical Arthroplasty.  The Multilevel Cervical Arthroplasty is a procedure where an Artificial disc replacement is performed at more than one level in the same patient. The combination of both procedures constitutes a Multilevel Arthroplasty (Arthroplasty is another name for Artificial Disc Replacement). This highlights our results using my “Lifestyles Outcomes Scale.” This is our personally created scale which details return to activities such as return to work, driving, and sports after surgery.  These results will be presented at the AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves Annual Meeting Joint section on Spinen in Phoenix, Arizona - March 11 - 14, 2009.

Read our presentation regarding our Outcomes Analysis after minimally invasive surgical  decompression for Lumbar Stenosis. Many patients with symptomatic Lumbar stenosis only require a minimally invasive procedure to decompress overgrown ligamentous and arthritic elements.  This highlights our results using my “Lifestyles Outcomes Scale.” This is our personally created scale which details return to activities such as return to work, driving, and sports after surgery.  These results will be presented at the AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves Annual Meeting Joint section on Spinen in Phoenix, Arizona, March 11 - 14, 2009.

Read our presentation regarding our Outcomes Analysis after Lumbar Hybrid Arthroplasty. Many patients present with more than one level of symptomatic lumbar degenerative disc disease. In certain patients a Lumbar Hybrid Arthroplasty may be warranted. A Lumbar Hybrid Arthroplasty is a combination of a fusion and a Lumbar disc replacement performed in the same patient. This presentation details our patients’ return to activities such as return to work, driving, and sports after surgery. This highlights our results which found patients returning to work within 3.6 months and returning to sports within 5.2 months after surgery! These results were presented at the Annual conference of the North American Spine Society in Toronto Canada, October 14-18, 2008.

Read our presentation regarding our analysis of Coronal Assesment after multilevel Charite Lumbar Arthroplasty. We created a new means of measuring coronal alignment and determined that when arthroplasties were used at multiple levels there was a certain degree of coronal malalignment which occurs. These results were presented at the American Society of Neuroradiology ASNR 46th Annual Meeting June 2 - 5, 2008 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Outcomes Analysis of Hybrid Disc Arthroplasty With STALIF
Pablo Pazmiño, M.D of Beverly Spine and Santa Monica Spine

sas8

We are presenting two posters at the annual Spine Arthroplasty Society meeting in sunny Miami, Florida. Our outcomes analysis features two subsets of patients who have undergone hybrid procedures, a combination of artificial disc replacements and fusion. With one series we studied patients with standard fusion constructs. With next poster presentation we focused on the subset of patients who were treated with the STALIF, Stand Alone Lumbar Interbody Fusion. This fusion construct allows fusion from an “Anterior Only Approach” and does not violate the posterior spinal musculature whatsoever. I have spoken at the Mazama Spine Conference on the STALIF specifically, this talk is available for download in our Presentations section. These results were presented at the Annual conference of the Spine Arthroplasty Society 8: in Miami Beach, Florida May 6-9, 2008.

Baseball Bat Related Trauma
Pablo Pazmiño, M.D of Beverly Spine and Santa Monica Spine

mid-america-ortho

This may be one of the most interesting research projects I have ever conducted. During a 5 year span I compiled all trauma which entered the emergency room which was caused by baseball bat related injuries. Interestingly enough we discovered that baseball bat related trauma was more severe than gunshot wounds or motor vehicle collisions. These results will be presented at the Mid America Orthopaedic Association in Amelia Island, FL, April 2008.

Cryosurgical ablation of Osteoid Osteoma
Pablo Pazmiño, M.D of Beverly Spine and Santa Monica Spine

mid-america-logo

Osteoid osteoma is a benign skeletal neoplasm of unknown etiology that is composed of osteoid and woven bone. The tumor is usually smaller than 1.5 cm in diameter. Osteoid osteoma can occur in any bone, but in approximately two thirds of patients, the appendicular skeleton is involved. This research project details a novel method of treating these tumors with cryotherapy (cold probe therapy). With these unique probes we demonstrate healing these tumors with cold therapy. These results were presented at the Mid America Orthopaedic Association in Amelia Island, FL, April 2008.

Read my presentation regarding the STALIF. The STALIF is a new means of providing an anterior only lumbar fusion. The STALIF stands for Stand Alone Lumbar Interbody Fusion. With this procedure there is no need to violate the posterior musculature of the lumbar spine whatsoever. The entire procedure can be performed anteriorly. These results were presented at the annual Mazama Spine Summit in Winthrop, WA January 2008.

TLR-4 expression in intervertebral disc tissue : A possible link to degenerative disc disease

Pablo Pazmiño, M.D of Beverly Spine and Santa Monica Spine

oref

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces matrix degradation and markedly stimulates the production of several cytokines, i.e., interleukin-1?, ?6, and ?10, by disc cells and chondrocytes. We performed a series of experiments to compare cellular responses of cells from the human intervertebral disc (nucleus pulposus and annulus fibrosus). The DNA content and the rate of proteoglycan synthesis and degradation were determined. We found elevated levels of TLR-4 expression in intervertebral disc tissue and feel this may be a possible link to degenerative disc disease.
