Common Terms
Some of the terms commonly used to describe this condition include lumbar stenosis, sciatica, back pain, and arthritis. Other terms that are closely related include disc protrusion, bulging disc, pinched nerve, sciatica, disc disease, disc degeneration, degenerative disc disease, and black disc.
Symptoms
As we age our disc or shock absorber dehydrates. This can lead to a constant low back pain and ache. Eventually the joints of the spine become arthritic and in response to this the body stiffens its ligaments. This thickening of extra bone and ligaments will begin to compress the nerves. Once a nerve is pinched, pain from this nerve will radiate into the regions served by affected nerve roots that are irritated or impinged by the arthritic material. Often, patients have pains in the thighs, knees, or feet. Other symptoms may include sensory changes such as numbness, tingling, muscular weakness, paralysis, paresthesia, and abnormal reflexes.
Microsurgery
All areas under compression from excess tissue are removed by Dr. Pazmino under direct magnification. Dr. Pazmino utilizes special surgical loupes or a surgical microscope to find and remove all excess bone and arthritic ligaments.
Sciatica Relief
When Dr. Pazmino removes the excess arthritic material you will wake up with resolution of your leg, buttock, and back pain.
Baxano   iO-Flex®
Rapid, Direct, Controlled Decompression
  • Directly removes impinging ligament and bone with controlled bimanual reciprocations
  • Can be used in patients with all severities of symptomatic, single and multi-level stenosis

Preservation of Facet Integrity
The iO-Flex® System’s “inside out” approach vs. traditional rigid instruments
  • Offers better access to lateral recess and foramen
  • Preserves facet joints and lamina
  • Maintains biomechanical stability
  • Offers greater preservation of bone for fusion fixation
Cutting Edge Technology
The iO-Flex® System utilizes thin, flexible instruments to provide precision lumbar decompression from the “inside out.” The intuitive, controlled “over the wire” system is designed to:
  • Target and decompress bone and soft tissue in the foramen, lateral recess, and central canal
  • Preserve facet joint integrity, thus maintaining biomechanical stability and bone for fusion fixation
  • Minimize muscle trauma by allowing decompression of up to 4 nerve roots through a single-point access

Decompression using the iO-Flex® System may help:
  • Reduce OR time
  • Decrease hospital length of stay

Straightforward Operation in Experienced Hands
Dr. Pazmino travels nationwide as an instructor to teach other surgeons how to perform this Baxano iO-Flex procedure. Patients in California, or those who travel to Spine Cal have the distinct advantage of having Dr. Pazmino perform the procedure himself. Dr. Pazmino can perform this through his standard minimally invasive posterior approach. This enables him clear visualization into the disc space. Through this procedure Dr. Pazmino limits dissection through important posterior muscular structures.
